Stop Buying Whitening Strips — Here’s Why Your Dentist’s Home Kit Is Actually the Move

I see it all the time. A patient comes in, frustrated that the whitening strips they’ve been buying online for months haven’t really done anything, or worse, have left their teeth sore and sensitive without any visible improvement.
I’m not here to make anyone feel bad about trying over-the-counter options.

The advertising is convincing, the prices are tempting, and the concept makes sense. But there are important reasons why dentist prescribed home whitening consistently outperforms anything you’ll find on a pharmacy shelf.

The Legal Difference You Need to Know

In the UK, the law is clear on this: teeth whitening products above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied by a dental professional. This regulation exists to protect patients from harm, high concentrations of peroxide, incorrectly used, can damage enamel and irritate soft tissues.

What this means in practice: any whitening product you can buy freely online or in a shop is limited to concentrations too low to make a meaningful difference to your tooth shade. That’s why your strips aren’t working.

Anything being sold with claims of higher concentrations through non-dental channels is either misrepresenting its contents, or is operating outside legal UK regulations. Neither is a comfortable thought.

Why Custom Trays Make Such a Difference

This is underappreciated, and I think it’s one of the most important points.
Generic one-size-fits-all whitening strips or trays don’t fit your teeth precisely.

This means:

  • The gel makes uneven contact with your tooth surfaces (patchy results)
  • Gel can leak onto your gums, causing irritation and sensitivity
  • You get unpredictable coverage, particularly around the edges and back of front teeth

Custom trays made from impressions of your own teeth fit snugly against every surface. The gel stays exactly where it’s supposed to be. You get even, consistent whitening across all the teeth being treated, and minimal gum contact.

It sounds like a small detail. The results are night and day.

What About Sensitivity?

Sensitivity is the most common concern patients have about whitening, and it’s a legitimate one.

Products like Boutique Whitening include specially formulated sensitivity options, lower concentrations of the active ingredient, combined with ingredients that help manage the sensitivity response.

For patients who’ve had bad experiences with sensitivity in the past, I’d always recommend starting with a gentler concentration and building up. I’d also suggest using a sensitivity toothpaste in the weeks before and during whitening, and not wearing the trays for longer than directed.

“Will It Make My Teeth Unnaturally White?”

A concern I hear surprisingly often, and it speaks to a good instinct. Nobody wants that bleached, opaque look.

The answer: no, professional home whitening won’t do that. Whitening gel works by lifting intrinsic staining from within the tooth. It can only lighten teeth to their natural maximum, it can’t turn them white beyond what your genetics allow. The results look natural because they are natural.

What Whitening Won’t Do

Worth being clear: whitening only affects natural tooth enamel. It won’t change the colour of white fillings, composite bonding, crowns, or veneers. If you have visible restorations, discuss this with your dentist before starting whitening, we may need to plan around them or replace them after treatment to ensure everything matches.

The Right Time to Whiten

If you’re planning any cosmetic treatment (like composite bonding), I always recommend whitening first. That way, we can match any new restorations to your brightened shade, rather than the other way around.
